“Five More” for College Students with AD/HD
How many times have you been doing homework or completing an assignment or project for school only to experience the feeling that you just want to stop and do something fun or stimulating? “I can’t do this anymore. This is SOOOOOO boring!” Playing video games, watching a Netflix show or checking out Snapchat or Instagram are calling your name…“Hey, Adam. Come on over here and check this out.” It’s so tempting, but you’ve got to complete your schoolwork. Oh, the drudgery! It’s particularly difficult for college students with AD/HD to resist these “shiny new (or not-so-new) objects.” So what are you to do these cases? One idea is to invoke the “Five-More Rule.” It’s pretty straight forward: when you have to do tasks or activities that are mundane or boring and you’re feeling frustrated, brain-fried, bored or you “just want to get it over with,” see if you can do five more things. For example, read five more pages in your textbook. Answer five more problems. Write five more sentences or paragraphs. Work for five more minutes. Get the idea? Then take a break for a few minutes…take stroll down the hallway of your dorm, listen to a few songs on Spotify, check out what your friends posted on Instagram…but then go back and do five more things and, if necessary, take a break again. Athletes build physical stamina by pushing past the point of exhaustion. Similarly, you can make it a goal to build mental stamina by pushing past the point of frustration, boredom and/or mental exhaustion on a regular basis. Try it and see what you think!
